Alief's Newest Park - Hackberry Park!

On August 18, 2007, Alief residents and local and state dignitaries gathered to announce the acquisition of Alief's newest park, 22 acres of beautiful green space featuring trees, ponds, and walking paths. The former golf course also came with existing buildings that will be renovated into program and activity centers for the community.
So what do the Houston Parks Board and the Houston Parks and Recreation Department see as the future of Hackberry Park? We see Hackberry Park as a complement to Alief Community Park. Whereas Alief Community Park is packed with "Active" recreation fields and courts, Hackberry Park is envisioned to be a "Passive" park which takes advantage of the peaceful beauty of the property.
The acquisition was made possible by a Public-Private Partnership between the City of Houston and the Houston Parks Board. Many thanks to Houston Endowment Inc., The Wortham Foundation, Inc. and The Brown Foundation, Inc. who helped make this acquisition possible.
"All across the country, communities, cities and businesses are recognizing the important role parks play in the development of a vibrant and active community. We would like Houston to be at the forefront of that movement and this proposal moves us even further ahead. This site in the Alief area is another great step along that path."
Mayor Bill White
"This initiative is exactly what the community needs. The Alief area is one of the city's most rapidly growing (areas). We've been working for more than three years to provide more park space in the area so citizens will have another safe and convenient location to bring their families in the neighborhood."
