A Historic Vision Becomes Reality
Houston’s first park master plan, created 95 years ago, envisioned an "emerald necklace” system of parks linked by the city’s natural bayous. In keeping with our focus to create connected greenbelts along our bayous, the Houston Parks Board, in partnership with Harris County Flood Control District, the City of Houston, and Trust for Public Land, has completed the acquisition of several acres of new parkland along Brays Bayou for the first phase of the Brays Bayou Greenway Project. In 2006 and 2007, the Houston Parks Board collaborated with the Harris County Flood Control District to acquire 15 acres along the lower stretch of Brays Bayou. As a result, a new park along the Bayou was created that now anchors a connected series of park properties from Broadway at the Ship Channel to I-45 – a total of almost 4 miles of green space. The second phase of the Brays Bayou Greenway Project is now underway, and will complete the greenway expansion to MacGregor Park.

In addition to providing a greenbelt for future hike and bike trails, “Brays Greenway” also responds to the needs of the historic Harrisburg neighborhood, whose residents have been asking for a public park in their area for many years. This wonderful success was announced in a press conference with Mayor White on October 25, 2007. |
